Storm Water Quality

Bingara Gorge’s integrated water cycle management strategy will manage the quantity and quality of stormwater and the continuation of environmental flows into our local waterways through a comprehensive stormwater retention and re-use scheme.

Stormwater entering drains carries pollution that can cause algae, illness for fish and can cause damage to other water life. By making sure that we do not pollute stormwater, we can all contribute to protecting the environment and keeping our beaches and waterways clean and healthy.

Litter

Make sure that litter cannot blow or fall out of your general rubbish or recycling bins,  by closing the lid and placing heavy items on top where possible.

Grass Clippings and Leaves

Plant matter can block drains and cause flooding and, as it rots, creates high levels of nutrients that feed algae in waterways. Place ‘green matter’ with food scraps in a compost heap or in a bin to keep drains clear and provide natural fertiliser for your garden.

Paint

For water based paints, brush the excess paint out of the brushes on scrap material and then rinse them in your garden. Brushes used for oil based paints should be rinsed in an appropriate solvent which should be stored until the next local ‘Clean Out’ day.

Washing Your Car

Wash your car on a grassed area. Not only will it water your garden, it will also prevent nutrients in the detergent from entering our waterways and feeding algae. At Bingara Gorge you can use recycled water for washing your car, boat or caravan. Please note that washing your car may be subject to water restrictions from time to time.

Changing Motor Oil

One litre of motor oil is enough to contaminate one million litres of water. Oil should be stored until the next Clean Out day, not poured down the drain.

Fertiliser and Pesticides

Avoid using fertiliser or pesticide where it could wash into drains and cause algae or poisoning in waterways. Most native plants do not need fertilising and would prefer compost or mulching from grass clippings, leaves and food scraps.

Landscaping and Construction

Protect stockpiles of soil and sand from wind and rain under a tarpaulin to prevent them from blowing into drains. Where possible, avoid grading and excavation works during wet weather.
